My mom was telling me on Wednesday night that she heard a story about a guy with a broken leg. When I asked her to recite the story she asked my dad to tell it for her. As my dad pulls up a chair to the front of my desk he begins to tell me about a boy and his family who owned a farm. The boy’s father owned an old sick horse and because he felt bad for the horse he let it run free over the mountains to enjoy the rest of its life. The next day the horse came back better than ever and even brought all his horse friends with him. Everyone who knew this man praised his luck, for now he had a herd of horses on his farm. The next day his son goes out to train the wild horses for his father because he was old and unable. As he was training, one of the horses threw him to the ground, breaking his leg on impact! How unfortunate that his son, the only viable member of the farm is injured and cannot complete his work! Bare with me, the story gets better.
Two days later a war breaks out and the army is looking for men to fight! Of course, the farmer’s son couldn’t go to war with a broken leg! As time passes the leg heals and it turns out that all the sons from the other farms were killed in combat! As a result, there were no more viable workers to man the farms in the village, therefore the farmer and his son became very wealthy with their farm!
Now you’re probably wondering why on earth did I tell you a story about a boy breaking his leg. Well, this story, although not biblical, gives people a hope that shines bright during their suffering. When we go through suffering, we tend to get angry and question God. We turn away from God and give Him our backs. But Psalms 62 says “Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.” God doesn’t want us to turn our backs on Him during our suffering because he has a plan! There’s always good in the bad and in the story not only was the boy’s life saved because of his suffering, but he also became rich! If we turn to God during our suffering not only will He save our lives but He will make us rich in love and all other things in life! – A
